Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4 in 1972. Scott was raised as an all-only daughter of her grandmother. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Between two work, she studied secondary education. She was hoping to be an English teacher in high school. However, her dream was short-lived when she quit school after three years of studying and becoming a teachers' aide. She began her career as a spoken word artist, performing her own work at live poetry readings and eventually linked up together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate as well as co-writing You Got Me. In Roots performance, she revealed herself as an artist. Then she secured collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She gained more knowledge of the stage when she performed in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
